A chilling and captivating book, THE MERCIES is a story of resilience. Taking place in a Norwegian village in the 1670's, it follows Maren, who watched as all the village men died in a storm, and has had to find a way to survive with those losses, as well as the grief that comes with it; as well as Ursa, the daughter of a merchant who was married off to a witchhunter before being brought north. When their paths cross both women's lives are changed forever, and they must find a way to survive the perils around them.
Beautifully written, this story left me chilled. It is not often that I have to put down a book, but there were several times I had to walk away from this one to just sit and think about it. A must read!
HIGHFIRE is a thrilling read, filled with the same humor and fast pace that made me fall in love with the Artemis Fowl series as a kid. Vern is the last dragon (that he knows of), so he spends his days hiding in the Louisiana swamp watching Flashdance and drinking vodka. A series of less than savory events lead to Everett "Squib" Moreau becoming Vern's personal assistant, and this mismatched duo ends up taking the swamp by storm. Featuring a crooked cop that makes the Joker look like a good guy, several less than sanitary swims in the swamp, and a whole lot of fire power, you won't want to miss this book!

I feel like nothing I say could convey truly how wonderful this book is. Reading it felt a little bit like a gift that I gave myself; It's fairly short, so from the first chapter you feel like you're already so deep in that if you only read a little longer you'll be able to finish it, and this, combined with the fantastic story , makes it a book you won't be able to put down. It's the story of two immensely powerful siblings; Kev, born during the 1992 LA riot spends most of his twenties in jail on Rikers Island, and Ella, who left home to get a hold on her powers face off against the systematic racism that has shaped their lives. An incredibly passionate and angry novella, this book is a must read for all fans of afrofuturism, of sci-fi, or honestly, of great stories in general
